Are you looking for a job?

Job Search

We cannot find you a job but we can give you advice about how to get a job. Come along to JOB SEARCH

JOB SEARCH meets on the last Friday of every month from 4.30p.m to 5.30p.m at the reception.

We can advise you about:

  • - workers' rights

  • - writing a CV and personal statement

  • - application forms

  • - getting a National Insurance Number

  • - up-to-date information on which jobs are available

But you will have to write your own CV and apply for the job yourself. There are many students in Bournemouth, both English and international, looking for jobs so finding one is not easy. You have to try very hard every day. Most students who do a lot of research and apply at a lot of places will find a job.

There is also a noticeboard at reception which has more information about finding a job.

Am I allowed to work in the UK?

EU Passport holders have the same working rights as UK citizens.

If your country joined the EU on 1 May 2004 or 1 January 2007 you might have to  register with the Home Office in order to work. Please see the Workers Registration Scheme information on www.workingintheuk.gov.uk

If you have a Tier 4 student visa, you are allowed to work for a maximum of 10 hours per week. You are not allowed to take permanent positions.

PLEASE NOTE: TIER 4 WORK ALLOWANCE WILL CHANGE FROM JULY 2011. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

How much will I earn?

Employers will pay according to the job, your experience and your qualifications so there is no correct answer. However, there are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1 October 2009 are:

  • £5.80 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older

  • a development rate of £4.83 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive

  • £3.57 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age

Do I need a National Insurance Number?

Yes, to work legally in the UK you must have a National Insurance Number. You can apply for a National Insurance Number at your local benefits agency office (Dept of Social Security, Jobcentre, JobcentrePlus). Make an appointment by calling 0845 6000643. Ask which office you need to go to.

You will need to take some documents to the interview, usually some of the following:

  • - your passport

  • - proof of your UK address (e.g. a utility bill)

  • - a letter/contract from your employer saying when you received your job offer / started work, the hourly rate of pay and duration of the employment

  • - OR proof that you are looking for work: application forms / letters from companies

  • - two payslips

Do I need to pay Income Tax?

If you receive payment for work,  you usually have to pay income tax to the government department called the Inland Revenue. The more you earn, the more tax you pay.

Annual Income tax rates 2010-11 for earnings above the tax-free threshold:

2010-11
Personal Allowance: 0%

£0-£6,475

Basic rate: 20%

£0-£37,400

Higher rate: 40%

£37,401-£150,000

Additional rate: 50%

Over £150,000

www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm

If you work for an employer, they should deduct the tax from your wages each pay day and give it to the Inland Revenue. This is called PAYE (Pay As You Earn). The Tax Office will provide you and your employer with a PAYE code so that your employer knows how much tax to deduct each pay day.

Where should I apply for a job?

The following companies usually employ students for part-time work:

  • Cafes and restaurants

  • Fast food chains

  • Hotels

  • Pubs and clubs (over 18 years old because of sale of alcohol)

  • Supermarkets

Ask other students if they know of any jobs where they are working.
